The African University College of Communications (AUCC) is a private tertiary institution dedicated mainly to the study of the media and communication. The AUCC was established in 2001 initially as the Africa Institute of Journalism and Communications (AIJC) by Hon. Kojo Yankah, former editor of Ghana’s widest circulation newspaper, the Daily Graphic, nine years director of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, seven years Minister of State, and eight years Member of Parliament of the Republic of Ghana. The diploma-awarding institute admitted the first batch of 60 students in October 2002, and was formally accredited as a tertiary institution by the National Accreditation Board in March 2004. In November 2007, with a population of 300 students, AIJC was accredited to offer a four-year B.A. degree programme in Communication Studies, under its new name, African University College of Communications – becoming the first university in Africa offering journalism and communication studies as its flagship. VISION To become Africa's best centre for Journalism, Communication Information Technology and Business, Information Technology and Business Management studies, providing opportunities for advanced learning and professional and practical application for the rapid growth and development of the continent of Africa. MISSION To provide creative leadership as a trainer, delivering enriched learning experience and promoting professional, cultural and economic development. Superb Academic Liberal Arts and African Studies Focus The school’s liberal arts & African studies department provides, for all students, a liberal arts core that is intended to cultivate critical thinking scholars who can reflect thoughtfully about society, especially about the uniqueness of Africa and its place in the international/global system. Intensive Professional Training AUCC provides multiple points for practical learning intended to develop real-world professional skills in our students. Students obtain hands-on experience in AUCC’s modern digital labs and studios. Our students are also required to participate in internships with local newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations, graphic and visual arts organizations, respected advertising and public relations agencies and development agencies, all intended to provide them with practical media experience. Real-world professional experience for students is further enhanced through our field learning practicum classes. We aim to engage media organizations to host some of our classes on-site, where students will be able to work as reporters, editors, PR & advertising representatives, web and graphic designers, documentary reporters and broadcasters alongside professionals.
